“Cosi” – An institution full of basket cases (sorry, psych patients)….none of whom can speak Italian, act, or sing a note….and you want to perform Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte! What do you reckon is the inevitable outcome? But, be prepared for a Wow delivery with no punches pulled! …………8 Sept – 23 Sept, 2023.

Cosi

by arrangement with HLA Management Pty Ltd
written by Louis Nowra
directed by Bruce Akers

Performed at Heidelberg Theatre from
8 September – 23 September, 2023

Cosi is set in a psychiatric institution in Melbourne in 1971 during the changing social climate caused mainly by the war in Vietnam. Lewis has recently left Uni and faces the challenge of directing the Mozart opera Cosi Fan Tutte staged in a burnt-out theatre with the patients as cast members. Initially hesitant, he becomes emotionally involved with his patients-cum-actors as his operatic production lurches forward and anti-war protests rage outside. Filled with an over-enthusiastic cast who can’t sing, act or speak Italian, what could possibly go wrong? (Text by Chris McLean – HTC)

“My Old Lady” – So, you’re sad and broke….and then you inherit an apartment in the centre of Paris! What a win! But the tenant is in no hurry to vacate…ever. So where is the value in that?…… 30 June – 15 July, 2023

Mathias (George Werther) struggles to understand the implications of “en viager” as Mathilde (Lindy Yeates) describes her long-standing tenancy agreement.

My Old Lady

written by Isreal Horovitz
directed by Maureen McInerney

Performed at Heidelberg Theatre from
30 June – 15 July 2023

New Yorker Mathias is middle-aged, broke and unhappy. His recently-deceased, estranged father, has left him an apartment in Paris, which Mathias intends to sell as quickly as possible. On arrival, he is surprised and bewildered to find the apartment occupied by an elderly lady and her fierce and feisty daughter. What’s more, an arcane French law decrees that they are entitled to it “en viager”: lifetime habitation!

In the course of just one week, what starts as a bitter confrontation develops into a deeply moving  exploration of culture, different family values, and dignity. (Text by Chris McLean – HTC Posters & Programme).

“Molly Sweeney” – Just what are our life memories made of? How much does the image of our environment play in our imagination and our sense of presence? Following life-changing surgery, Molly walks us through the effects on her reality, her relationships and her vision of the future.…… 21 April – 6 May, 2023

Molly Sweeney (Alexandria Page) introduces us to her new world.

Molly Sweeney

written by Brian Friel
directed by Joan Moriarty

Performed at Heidelberg Theatre from
21 APRIL – 6 MAY 2023

Set in 1990s Ballybeg, County Donegal, this play explores the relationship between the blind Molly Sweeney, her husband Frank and her ophthalmologist Mr Rice, who performs a successful operation to restore Molly’s sight. The play is related as shards of memory as each of three characters recalls the leadup to the operation, the operation itself, and the dramatic impact that Molly’s response to her new sightedness had on all of them. While the two men believed the gift of sight would be nothing short of a miracle, Molly finds her new world threatening and overwhelming and withdraws from it.

This beautifully crafted story captures eloquently each character’s happy and painful histories, leading to an unexpected and very touching conclusion.
