We are introduced to Stephen Wraysford who becomes immersed in an illicit love affair in the early years of the 20th century. Complicated as this is, he is soon entangled in the horrors of the First World War, reliant now on the camaraderie of his fellow soldiers, whilst struggling to deal with real life, and death, in the trenches.
